Find Your Style
Though most outdoor ornamental water gardens, goldfish ponds and koi ponds mimic nature in style there are formal ponds that will absolutely take your breath away. Your pond should be a reflection of you and everyone has different taste. Therefore, there are only very loose guidelines to follow when creating a design style for your pond.
I like to design a pond to blend in with its surroundings. For example, my home now has a formal Mediterranean feel to it so when we began designing our personal koi pond we wanted a more formal style for it. At our old house, though, the pond was set within a cluster of trees and the feel there was a shady woodland environment. You can see from the following picture of our very first pond that we chose a natural woodland style.

We always have to consider the budget. A formal pond usually has walls and walls are more expensive so keep in mind the types of materials you'll need to create the style of your pond. OUR PROJECT POND
For our project pond we are choosing a peaceful Oriental garden style to showcase our Japanese koi. A "mountain" of rock will be at the back of the pond and a gentle waterfall will flow from it. We want the edge of the pond to look natural to its environment so we'll create a rock shelf around the entire perimeter minus the portion where the waterfall will go.
