USE THEM WISELY

The DANGER ZONE is from 50º to 68º. That’s when bacteria and parasites thrive but the fish has no immune system. That’s why it’s very important that you do not keep the water above 50º for an extended amount of time unless you have the ability to keep the water temperature above 68º.

The main use for heaters during the winter is to keep the pond’s surface from freezing over. A hole in the ice is necessary so that certain gases given off by the fish can escape. A Floating De-Icer is a great way to keep ice from forming on top. They come in 1000 watt and 1500 watt sizes and are designed to come on when water temperatures drop to 42º or below. An optional guard must be used used with liner ponds.

We also carry a 750 watt aquarium heater that can keep small amounts of water at up to 85º, very much depending on weather conditions and the amount of water it is trying to heat. A word of caution with these heaters: they are not designed for outdoor use and the thermostat control valve is not designed to be waterproof so whenever used outdoors you must take care to keep it dry.

We suggest that you consult with The Doc if you plan to use a heater in your pond this winter.
