Doc's Prescription Spring Start-Up Kits

Early spring is delightful.  The daffodils bloom, announcing the end of winter and the beginning of warmer times.  The pond awakens almost overnight.  The fish are hungry and begging for food.  Before we start feeding them, however, there are a few things we must do to insure a safe transition from winter to spring.  The pond should be given a good cleaning, the equipment serviced and the biological filter will need to be seeded.

We have made it simple to get all that is needed to start the pond up for the new season by selecting our favorite brands of products and combining them into Spring Start-Up Kits.  There are two kits.  Both are designed for ponds up to 2000 gallons.  The difference is that one is especially good for ponds with bead filters.

All the items in the kits can be purchased separately and in different quantity.  The advantages of buying the kits are the step-by-step instructions included in the package and there is a savings of about 10%.  The following goes into detail about each of the products and why they are needed for pond spring opening.

Doc's Prescription M-Wheat Food for Koi and Goldfish

Why feed wheat germ-based fish food during early spring?  In early spring the temperatures are very unstable.  They might plummet within 24 hours.  This can lead to septicemia, an internal infection that can kill the fish.  Wheat germ is nutritious and is quickly digested so it's perfect during seasonal changes.  Doc's Prescription M-Wheat Fish Food is low in protein and high in wheat germ.  "M" stands for "macrobiotic" which means "healthy".  This is the food we feed our personal koi in spring and fall.  They love it "almost" as much as they love their regular diet of M-Grow.  The pellets are all medium-sized.

M-Wheat (or any other food) should not be fed to the fish if the water temperature is below 50 degrees.  Feed M-Wheat once a day until the water temperature rises to and stays above 64 degrees.  Store leftover M-Wheat in the refrigerator (not the freezer) and use it in Autumn.

Master Test Kit

Trash any test kits left over from last season.  Test kits go bad quickly and a bad test kit will show incorrect readings.  The Master Test Kit includes tests for ammonia, nitrites, pH and salt.  These are drop tests with test tubes -- which are much more accurate than the strips.  As soon as you begin feeding the fish you must begin testing the water.  In early spring the biological filter is, for all practical purposes, non-existent.  That means there are no active nitrifying bacteria to change the deadly ammonia to nitrites and deadly nitrites to safe nitrates.
