TRICIDE-Neo Antibiotic Dip
for Ulcer Disease in Koi and Goldfish

Updated: January, 2007

Before this amazing product was introduced to the consumer and offered to retail outlets, our own Cecil Ferguson, "The Pond Doc", worked with the folks at the University of Georgia's Veterinary School of Medicine and helped them develop a dip that would heal ulcer disease without the need of stressful antibiotic injections.  We're very proud to have played a part in the development of this fish health medical break-through and thrilled that we can offer it now to our customers.

Clinical Information about Tricide-Neo.

Several years ago, the Emerging Diseases Research Group at the University of Georgia begin working on methods to resolve multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in human burn patients.  This research lead to formulation of a potentiating agent that makes otherwise resistant bacteria susceptible to low class antibiotics. The potentiator that has proven effective against the “super” bugs that infect burns will also kill common bacteria associated with ulcer disease and other superficial infections in companion koi (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Koi with ulcer infected with multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria before and 15 days after 5 to 10 min dips in Tricide-NeoTM on days 0, 2 and 4.

To date, we have found Tricide-Neo to be beneficial in treating superficial bacterial infections in fish maintained in both experimental and field conditions. Among the advantages of Tricide-Neo are its ease of use, safety and effectiveness against common gram positive and gram negative bacterial pathogens.

The antibiotic potentiator in Tricide-Neo has a rather interesting mode of activity that facilitates its spectrum of activity. Tricide creates holes (Figure 2) in the bacterial cell wall which in-turn allows antibiotics to flood the organism, destroys the effectiveness of the bacteria’s efflux pump and facilitates osmotic collapse of the bacterium. Because the potentiator causes direct physical damage to the bacteria, one is able to use less antibiotic than would normally be necessary and exposed bacteria are less likely to develop resistance to the chosen antibiotic. This later fact is particularly important in facilities where use of antibiotics without Tricide can quickly result in development of populations of  bacteria that are resistant to many readily available antibiotics. I am sure that as a koi enthusiast you are always searching for effective methods to reduce or prevent the evolution of antibiotic resistant bacteria in your fish and ponds.

While I have several years of experience using Tricide-Neo to treat superficial bacterial infections in fish, it is some of the Emerging Diseases Research Group’s latest findings that excite me and may be the most applicable to koi enthusiast. Based on preliminary trials, it appears that Tricide-Neo may prove of benefit as a pre-and post-shipment dip for preventing ulcer disease.  This could be viewed as a Quarantine Dip for lack of better term. In one trial, the Emerging Diseases Research Group used a group of koi that the supplier expected to develop ulcer disease soon after shipment. They treated the ~ 36 koi for 5 minutes on day O and 1 day later. As it so happened, the koi had to be moved on  day 3 resulting in additional stress. Using this treatment protocol, not a single died did nor did any of the treated fish develop ulcer disease. Based on past experience, the shipper that provided the test fish was astonished.
