World events are on everyoneís mind, including mine. Are we going to war? We may be at war before this publication goes to print. I hear so many opinions on what we should and shouldnít do as a nation that it gives me a headache. So now Iím going to work on giving you one. :)
Itís positively insane the political credibility we give actors and singers in our country. Since when did knowing how to sing and act become qualifications to run the most powerful nation in the world? Oh, I see! If a person is attractive I should trust him or her with my life. Or maybe itís the fact he may have played a president in a movie.
Donít get me wrong. Everyone has the right to voice his or her opinion. Thatís a right we have because weíre Americans. That right, however, can be abused when we donít look at the facts and think for ourselves. People who rely on the opinions of a person who is no more qualified to know whatís truly going on in the world than I am are showing political irresponsibility. Celebrities are using the fact that they are in front of a camera to voice their views ó views that are questionable ó after all, arenít these celebrities far removed from the real world?
Finally someone agrees with me. I heard on television last night that Sean Penn was refused a movie role because he is so ďpolitically activeĒ that it affects his box office appeal. Personally, he never appealed to me anyway but Iím glad to see that others are seeing through the stars.
Iíve made a point not to waste my time listening to or watching Barbara Streisand or Alec Baldwin. Didnít Alec Baldwin say he was going to leave the country if Bush was elected? Well, Alec, weíre waitingÖ
The problem is not so much the fact that all these ďexpertĒ celebrities lean so far left that they lose their balance, itís the fact that the reason I watch movies and listen to music is because I want to escape ó itís a fantasy thing. I donít want to be reminded that Tommy Lee Jones is a Democrat or Charleston Heston is a Republican. Itís a shame that we canít enjoy a movie anymore without wondering how politically active the stars are. Iím almost ready to agree with a friend who jokingly said the nation would be better off if we bombed Hollywood on our way to Iraq.
So what do I say to all those celebrities who think I want to hear their opinion?
ďFrankly, my dear, I donít give a damn.Ē
