Burning Bridges

When The Doc and I first began as pond hobbyists we discovered that correct information on ponds and fish health was hard to find. Many times the only information available was a bit tarnished by the fact that someone was trying to sell a product, most notably chemicals that create more problems than they solve and prefilters disguised as biofilters. That’s why we decided when we opened the doors to our garden center that we would try to provide information without prejudice. In fact “The Doc’s Pledge”, which was printed in the Premier Edition of What’s Up, Doc?, contains this passage... “We believe in providing sound, proven advice and products we know are safe and effective.”. It doesn’t surprise me that the objectiveness of our articles rubs some folks the wrong way.

Over the last couple of years we’ve received “hate mail” of sorts from all over the world and most recently our article entitled “Liner vs Liner” from The Watergarden Edition prompted an associate to call us to let us know we were “burning bridges” by publishing it. That made me feel so good! It meant that our publication is effective. It’s doing exactly what it is intended to do by steering folks from inferior, non-effective products that can waste their money to products that will perform.

Nothing we publish can hurt anyone if he/she is not trying to push a product that is ineffective.

As for our associate who warned us about burning bridges — we’re not worried. The only bridges we intend to burn are those that aren’t very sound. Get your marshmellows ready. There’s plenty more to come.
