Meet Smokey Jo

One Sexy Suragoi

Smokey Jo was the “Belle of the Ball” at the Southeastern Flower Show 2002. Seen here with her companions in a feeding frenzy during the show she displayed rare talent for grabbing the spotlight. She delighted everyone with her scene-stealing antics, allowing lots of folks, including children, to feed her by hand and nuzzle her chin.

Smokey Jo is a Gin Rin Suragoi purchased from the breeder in Japan by Randy LeFever of Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery. The Doc will argue with me about it, but she was originally purchased for ME! She is MY koi, not his! Smokey Jo is special because not only is she a fine specimen for her variety she is as tame and gentle as she can be. Randy was so delighted by Smokey Jo that he wouldn’t give her up until he bred her. Fine with us! Now Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery has thousands of Smokey Jo’s direct descendents.

During the show we were offered quite a bit of money for Smokey Jo but she wasn’t (and still isn’t) for sell. We have her children, though, in smaller sizes so that lots of folks can have their own Smokey Jo.

The Doc and I just brought back a truckload of fine, hand-picked koi from Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery and they all should be, by the time this publication goes out, already through quarantine and being sold. Along with Smokey Jo’s beautiful Soragoi young we selected some excellent quality American koi in a number of different varieties. We’ll put these koi up against any import and dare anyone to find a difference — except in the price.

We picked outstanding koi in all these varieties and more!

Hariwake with yellow and white so rich they shimmer.

Gin Rin Ochiba (also descendents of Smokey Jo).

Hi Utsuri with nice sumi.

Kohaku and Sanke for traditionalists.

Kujaku that look better than recent imports we’ve seen.

Chagoi that are champagne-colored.

Butterfly Matsuba with clear heads and patterns as perfect as they come.

We found and snatched up very rare apricot-colored koi unique to Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery. One in particular is a very stunning satiny doitzu that looks like orange sherbet
