Effects of a Fish Pond on Your Health

Studies have shown that people who own fish have a healthier life. A survey of 100 pet owners by APPMA (American Pet Products Manufacturer’s Association) showed that people who own fish generally have lower blood pressure, show less sign of stress, sleep better, record less absenteeism from work and have healthier sexual relationships than those who don’t.

The University of Pennsylvania studied the effect an aquarium has on dental patients when placed in the waiting room of a Dentist’s office. The calming effect of the aquarium routinely produced less apprehensive patients. They also found that people staring at aquariums containing fish fared better than those who stared at aquariums without.

Nursing Professor, Nancy Edwards PhD, of Purdue University tested the effect of aquariums containing fish on patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. Sixty residents of three nursing facilities in Indiana were part of the study. The results were outstanding — there was a notable decrease in the instances of wandering, pacing and physical aggression with the patients. One of the worse complications of Alzheimer’s is the weight loss that occurs from the patient’s inability to concentrate long enough to eat a meal. When aquariums were placed where the patients could see them while they ate food consumption rose by 17%! Many Alzheimer Care Centers now promote fish aquariums as features of their facilities.
