As soon as one enters the Barton’s backyard through an oriental arbor he is met by a 15-foot waterfall on the left spilling into a stream that will follow him along the flagstone walk down to another dramatic waterfall. A 10,000-gallon koi pond awaits just down a flight of flagstone steps complete with Neil Boyce of Blades and Blossoms’ trademark floating stepping stones.

Carol Barton, a veterinarian, has combined her love for the outdoors with her love for animals by providing her koi a healthy environment that’s absolutely breathtaking. The gardens are alive with vibrant colors from the perennial beds she’s planted herself. Here the pond is the centerpiece but it’s not the only thing that draws ones eyes. The plants have matured and grown into their surroundings erasing the lines between hardscape and landscape.

The Barton Pond was featured on our Saturday AM tour and I could see from the wide-eyed enthusiasm I saw on the faces of folks leaving the pond that it was a crowd’s favorite!

Hidden in the trees just down from the pond is the pump, filter and UV that together make this pond easy — only minutes a week — to maintain. The 1.5 hp High Flow External pump is installed below pond water level. This takes advantage of flooded suction. The pump does not have to PULL water so it works more efficiently and with less noise. Pumps are designed to PUSH and this pump is sized correctly to push the water up to the top of the waterfall just past the entrance arbor while maintaining enough flow to keep the water healthy and the Bartons happy.

3” bottom drains and fish-safe skimmer keep the Bartons out of the water. A ProBead Ultra High Flow 3.1 filter was painted black so that it blends into the shadows. It works as both mechanical and biological filtration to keep the water clean and healthy for the koi. An Emperor 130-watt Ultraviolet Water Sterilizer is used to kill green water algae and prevent it from growing back.
