The water quality of your pond is the one most important component of keeping healthy koi and goldfish. Water to koi is like air to us. If it's polluted he can't breathe. If it's filled with bad bacteria he gets sick. We can't breathe our own waste and stay healthy, neither can he.
Mother Nature did not build our backyard ornamental ponds -- we did. We cannot expect her to provide everything we need for a pond that is NOT natural. It may look it -- no liner showing -- plants spilling across the rocks -- but it is NOT natural. It has a rubber bottom and re-circulates the same water over and over again. Mother Nature only places a few fish in a lot of water. We place a lot of fish in a little water. For this -- we must compensate with added natural, mechanical and biological filtration. If anyone tells you that you do not need a filter on your pond they are wrong -- dead wrong! Ask the fish who is trying to breathe.
