External and Submersible
Pumps, Pump Parts and Accessories The choice of a pump for your pond should not be taken lightly. It is the heart of your pond continually re-circulating pond water through the filtration system and producing dissolved oxygen that koi and goldfish need to breathe. It determines whether your waterfall is a mild-mannered babbling brook or white water rapids. There are a lot of factors to consider when you are sizing a pump for your pond, waterfall or water garden. The rule of thumb is to circulate your water at least once per hour for ponds but that's not always the requirement. Larger ponds do not need to be turned over as quickly as smaller ponds. A wide waterfall will take much more flow to fill the width area than a skinnier waterfall. Some pumps are designed to push water up better than others and some external pumps have self-priming abilities that you'll need if placing your pump higher than the elevation of the pond. Then there's the question of purchasing an external vs submersible pond pump. We address all these questions and more in the articles we've written - articles in our archives. Here's a short list of articles having to do with choosing and maintaining pond pumps: |
