How
External Pumps SAVE You Money!
The PRICE of
an external pump is generally higher than its submersible counterpart.
The COST of a submersible pump, however, is much higher in the long run.
Here's why:
- Energy Efficiency
A 4000 gph
runs off 3.1 amps and costs $438.00. It's submersible counterpart, the 4000 gph
submersible pump can run up to 9.5 amps and costs $203.95. In one year's time
you will easily save the difference in the price of the two pumps ($234.05) on your
electric bill! Many external pumps are 2-speeds. Normal operation of
the pump is usually run on low and on quality models such as the ones we
stock the low speed is extremely energy efficient. The only time
that most folks would use the high setting would be while backwashing a
bead filter or "showing off" in front of company.
- External Pumps Tend to Last Longer
We find that submersible pumps tend to wear out after
about 1 year from debris getting inside and damaging the impeller.
(I always joke that the submersible pump will last as long as its
warranty). The external pump's pre-filtering is on the outside of
the pond and people tend to empty the basket more often because it is more
convenient plus the pump itself is not sitting in the sludge on the bottom

- Parts Can Be Replaced on External Pumps
When a part goes out on an external pump it can be replaced
quite easily. If, let's say, the impeller goes out on a submersible
pump there's no place but the trashcan for it.

re-circulation drains and fish-safe skimmers so all large debris can be easily removed by
shaking out the leaf-baskets attached to the side of the pump and in the skimmer.
Heavy and wet submersible pumps must be lifted from the bottom of the pond and cleaned at
least once a week during pond season. This can become a major problem for senior
citizens and others who can't lift heavy loads.
