Mechanical & Biological Filters
Filter Units, Upgrades, Accessories and Replacement Parts

Filtration is one of the most important components to a koi pond, goldfish pond or water garden though many treat filters like an option instead of a necessity.  If you want clean and healthy pond water you MUST have some sort of filter.  How effective the filter is depends on many factors - size of the filter - media used - how it's plumbed into the system - amount of fish load - size of pond - ...I really could keep going...

There are basically two kinds of filtering - Mechanical and Biological - and sometimes both filtering methods are rolled into one filter.  Mechanical filters remove debris from the water.  Biological filters house nitrifying bacteria.  Both utilize the same filter media.  The media traps dirt and other debris and sifts it from the water as the water runs through it and the same media gives housing to good nitrifying bacteria.  Most the time we find that the amount of filtering media is not enough to support the fish load of the pond and give adequate mechanical filtration.

Top of the line bead filters, like our ProBeads, are designed to give you the best mechanical filtration and biological filtration available on the market while providing low-maintenance design, especially when paired with a blower / bead agitator -- making them the choice for the koi pond keeper who has little time to spend cleaning pads.  Mid-range filters, like TetraPond Pressurized Filters, offer low-maintenance design with adequate mechanical and biological filtration for smaller goldfish ponds and water gardens with very light fish loads.  Although they are less expensive than bead filters they are less quality, do not give the superb filtering, and do not last as long as the higher-quality bead filters.
