Mechanical filters are important because they clean out the solids that accumulate in garden ponds. They help keep the water clean and clear.
BioFilters are as important to fish in a pond as a world without pollution is for us. Not only do biofilters remove silt and dirt from the pond, they aid in balancing the system to clear up and maintain healthy water (with or without fish) and -- most importantly -- a koi or goldfish pond cannot live healthfully without one.
