OceanClear Filter
|
Standard Option
The Ocean Clear comes standard with a
layer of bio-balls on the bottom of the unit, 5 each 1" fine, round 9"
filter pads and your choice of either 1" or 3/4" flex hose fittings.
This option is used whenever "fine" filtering is desired. The 1" fine
pads will trap the smallest of particles while the layer of bio-balls
on the bottom provide added biological filtration while keeping the
filter pads off the floor of the filter canister (this makes is much
easier to remove the pads - take our word for it!).
A great use for the Standard Option
OceanClear is with an indoor aquarium. Indoor aquariums of up to
500 gallons can benefit from the fine filtering of the Ocean Clear
when it's set up with 1" thick FINE media pads because indoor
aquariums generally do not accumulate the amount of organics and
debris that an outdoor pond will. Filtering out finer materials
is more desirable with glass walls because you will see more of the
fine particles than you would in an outdoor pond looking into it from
the top.
We recommend this option for those who
want to remove fine particles from fish ponds or indoor aquariums up
to 500 gallons. We do NOT recommend this option for those who want
less maintenance or for water gardens. The reason is that these fine
filter pads will "do their job" well and catch every little tiny speck
which means you'll be cleaning those pads more often - more than once
a week in most cases.
Doc's Choice Option
The Pond Doc's Choice Option contains a
layer of bio-balls on the bottom of the unit, 4 each 9" round filter
pads of varying thicknesses and textures and your choice of either 1"
or 3/4" flex hose fittings. A small upcharge will apply because the
coarser media is more expensive.
The reason this option is the Doc's Choice
is because it is the best configuration of thicknesses and textures
for the most efficient mechanical and biological filtering of most koi
ponds, goldfish ponds and water gardens of up to 500 gallons. The top
pad is the most coarse (loosely woven) of the filtering pads so that
it allows all but the biggest debris to filter down into the unit.
The next pad is medium textured so that it traps a few more
particles. The 1" thick, fine-textured pad is at the bottom laying on
the layer of bio-balls. This configuration helps with keeping the
unit functioning longer between cleanings while still providing
excellent mechanical and biological filtration. This option requires
cleaning about once a week during pond season.
Empty Canister Option
The empty Ocean Clear canister comes, of
course, empty. You have your choice of 1" or 3/4" flex hose fittings.
This is the option for those who want to
add their own media. Any 9" round pads will work. The thicker the
pads, the less pads will fit into the unit. You may also use
bio-balls or any loose media that you may have on hand.
A GREAT use for the Empty Ocean Clear
Canister is to use it on any sized koi pond or water garden to keep
the pH balanced and stable. Simply fill the canister up with marble
chips! The properties in the marble chips will naturally keep the pH
stable. A word of warning - the marble chips are for pH stability
ONLY and, by replacing the media that usually comes in this filter
with anything other than filtering media, you will not have a
mechanical or biological filter.
Installation and Operation of the Ocean Clear Filter
Install the filter inside the pond or
externally by slipping the flex hose over the flex hose fittings. If
you have 1" flex hose you need the 1" fittings. If you have 3/4" flex
hose you need the 3/4" fittings so order your model accordingly.
The hose from the pump goes on the top fitting. This
allows the water to filter down into the unit. Then connect the hose
going back to the pond to the bottom fitting. If installing the
filter under water and the filtered water needs only to go back into
the pond you can leave off the returning hose.
If using 1" fine media and/or 3/4" hose do
not exceed 900 gph flow through the filter. Looser materials and 1"
hose will allow up to 1200 gph. If the lid of the unit leaks (and the
O-Ring seal is in place) there may be too much pressure going through
the filter. If your pump is too strong to go directly into the filter
install the filter on a by-pass. We'll be glad to help you further
with that. Just call Cecil at (404) 375-9599.
You will know that the filter needs
cleaning when your waterfall or fountain (whatever water return you
have) has less water flow. For most ponds the filter media will need
to be cleaned once a week during pond season (unless using the 1" fine
material - then it will probably be more often). While nitrifying
bacteria is establishing in your filter you should only clean a few of
the pads at a time. When the bacteria is strong you can clean all the
pads but you do not need to clean the bio-balls. The bio-balls should
be cleaned only once or twice a year unless there is an extraordinary
amount of sludge in the bottom of the filter.
To remove the sludge that accumulates at
the bottom of the filter simply unscrew the cap off the drain located
at the bottom of the canister and run water through the unit and
bio-balls. This does not have to be done every time you clean the
pads.
To get inside the filter first unscrew the
little white screw on the lid to release the pressure. Then all you
need to do is unscrew the lid off the top of the filter. Make sure
that all O-Rings and gaskets are in place when screwing the lid back
on.
