Our Showcase Walk-Across Water Lily Pond

This 11,000 gallon pond is 5 feet deep and proves that many varieties of hardy water lilies will thrive in deeper waters than what the "books say".

I love this pond.  It's "suspended rocks" are sturdy enough to walk across and allow us the opportunity of mingling in the middle with the goldfish and water lilies.  It's a great mixture of plant to fish and has a natural feel.

The "Before" Picture

Before building the pond we had nothing but pieces of statuary displayed in this patch of grass.  It wasn't very attractive.  This area is located out front by the road and we thought something pretty might turn some heads and urge a few folks to drop in.  I needed a place to showcase water lilies and I wanted something deep.

Digging the Hole
A "special surprise feature" would make my water lily pond into a masterpiece.  Work began clearing out the grass and digging the hole...

Now, that's a Hole!
And what a hole!  This water garden is 5 ft. deep in most areas with 2 ft. deep shelves, perfect for display of miniature water lilies and marginal water plants...

Underlining Elements...
You wouldn't believe the amount of underlayment it took to protect the liner from rocks and roots.  With a pond this size a small hole in the liner might never be found!

Everyone helped while some of us watched (see Angela in the back) as the last stone of our surprise feature was installed.

Formalizing the Landscape
Moises shines when he creates...  He created this beautiful formal flagstone walkway to the gazebo next to the pond.

The Deck is Last
After the construction was finished and the pond was filled with water work was begun on the observation deck.

Ta-Da!
Nothing was complete until the water plants were in.  We placed several large water lilies on the bottom and softened the edges of the pond with healthy greenery and lotuses.  I chose a few pieces of my "private stash" of statuary to create interest and splash.

Reflecting...
Now it was time to take advantage of the countless opportunities for beautiful pictures... Here's our cherub reflecting on the day's work.

The Three Graces
Water flows gently from the top of the fountain.  The three graces fountain fit perfectly at the end of the pond close to the observation deck.

Our playful cherub triplets hide among the cattails.  (I allowed someone to talk me into selling this piece to them.  Now I wish I still had it...)

Rebecca's End of the Pond
My miniature water lilies grew well on the two-feet-deep shelves.  My "Rebecca" was placed at the other end of the pond among the lotuses.

Sunset
My favorite time of the day is when the day begins to fade away.  That's when everyone is gone and I can spend a few moments out by my water lily pond watching the last rays of the sun dance on the water.
