| The space we chose for Nemar's showcase was the part of the grounds where we displayed our oriental statuary, an area covered by fake golf greens left over from the previous tenants. We wanted a true koi pond with state of the art filtration, a pond where we could move our mascot, RinFinFin. We wanted to allow all the kids that visited the garden center to feed him and his buddies. This is what it looked like the day Nemar cut away the shape of the pond-to-be. I must say that at that time poor Nemar had no idea that this would become The Doc's favorite pond and, therefore, Cecil would drive him crazy about it... | |
| A pick and a shovel just wouldn't cut it! Nemar and his son, Jason, went to work with the big claw, digging and digging... | |
| ...Oooops! The Doc didn't tell Nemar that our MAIN water line was buried under there. I was just happy that it wasn't a gas main! Of course, our toilets were out of commission for a day while the water was re-directed. | |
| "Shots Happen" | Many things happen between these two shots but I've "misplaced" the pictures, hopefully temporarily, that I took during the building process. The pond was further sculpted. A 3" bottom drain was installed along with a fish-safe skimmer. |
![]() The Pump |
This is the external pump that was installed behind the berm and painted green to further disguise it. Notice a gate valve on the right. This gate valve is used to turn off the suction from the skimmer when we feed the fish. Otherwise the food goes down the skimmer before the fish can get it. |
![]() Filter System |
The filter system was installed. A ProBead Ultra High Flow split tank bead filter keeps the water clean and healthy while the Emperor Aquatics ultraviolet water clarifier unit (black PVC tubes) keeps the water clear. |
![]() Filled |
Before all the rock and landscaping were completed the pond was filled to insure that the system was working correctly. The water was later drained so rocks could be layed in place and the water return completed. |
![]() Big Rocks! |
The Doc wanted his special koi pond to have an unusual water return. Instead of the usual waterfall he wanted a soothing, quite atmosphere where he could see his koi clearly. In the middle of the night it came to him and he and Nemar went to work to make his dreams come true. |
![]() Mountain Streams |
Nothing is more oriental (and very feng shui correct) than mountains behind the water. Why not create mini mountain streams? By developing a manifold for water placement, we are able to have 6 different outlets of streams and can control each outlets water flow. Aerators were also added to provide necessary dissolved oxygen. |
![]() Fire & Warmth |
The Bridge and the Pagoda were both painted bright red to add fire and warmth to our Oriental Koi Pond. |
![]() Viewing Deck |
Landscaping was completed and we were a bit worried that kids (and adults) would climb all over it to see the fish so viewing decks were created on both sides to keep the plants healthy. Nemar constructed attractive bamboo rails to help even more. |
![]() The Geisha |
A beautiful geisha (a piece by Al's Garden Art) was placed to add a sense of music. |
![]() Quiet & Clear |
The 80-watt Emperor UV Nemar placed following the bead filter keeps the tranquil waters of this pond as clear as they are quiet, allowing us to literally read a quarter off the bottom. |
![]() The Pond |
A great view of the oriental pond. |
![]() Peaceful |
Another wonderful view of the pond when the sun is starting to go down. The large boulders of the water feature do appear as mountains in the background. |
![]() Pandas Have Company |
A couple of our feral outdoor cats ("Possum" on the left and "Bandit" on the right) keep Panda company as he plays among the bamboo planted to create height behind the "mountains". |
![]() Swamp Hisbiscus |
The brilliant red of the swamp hisbiscus that was planted by Rysnsun Landscapes in their hummingbird bog garden showcase placed just in front of the oriental koi pond appears as if it were planted to highlight the red of the bridge and arbor. |
![]() Autumn Colors |
I found this view of the leaves turning hard to resist. |
